It can be seen in action on the internet in both fan and official videos drawn from the game, including those below. It’s lovely, all swooshy and forward thrusting, influenced by, but also an improvement on the Enterprise-E of the last three TNG films. While also avowedly non-canonical it shows a post- TNG/DS9/VOY Star Trek universe.

Star Trek Online is an online (funny that) computer game launched in 2010. The former on TNG’s beloved television finale ‘All Good Things’ and, according to author Paul Cornell, his Doctor Who book ‘Human Nature’ (1994) and its Hugo nominated television adaptation (2007). That reality is wiped out by the book itself, but while the story and its ship are not canonical (following the time-honoured tradition that no Star Trek that isn’t film or television is canonical), both have an influence. In that reality, Commodore Data is the captain of the USS Enterprise-F, two ships along from the TNG one, and it and its captain are hornswoggled by Riker into his plan to use the Guardian of Forever to change history. He’s an angry old man, embittered by the long ago death of his one true love Deanna Troi.

One title, 'Imzadi', concerns an aged Admiral William Riker, living even further in Star Trek’s future than the series was then set. Deciding to go where its original Star Trek range had gone before, Pocket supplemented their monthly paperback TNG range with less frequent, more expensive hardback books, that would be eligible for more and more prestigious bestseller lists. The tie-in Pocket Books range was also at its height. One of the most watched programmes on US television and picking up awards left, right and centre. In the mid-nineties Star Trek: The Next Generation was in its pomp.

And the one from 'Yesterday’s Enterprise', of course with the one that’s briefly in Star Trek: Generations before that, right? And the one from Enterprise, obviously – and the one that appears on a screen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Then the replacement one from the Original Cast films, and the replacement one from the TNG cast films. There’s one from T he Original Series, and the one from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
